Inspection and Maintenance of Your PD Blower Is Critical

Positive displacement blowers are commonly used to deliver bulk materials in the food and beverage, minerals and environmental industries. PD blower motors propel dual eccentric impellers that operate within a cast iron casing. As the machine revolves, air or gas is forced out against the existing system’s pressure.

It is here that careful maintenance and inspections are vital to the successful operation of your machinery. The rotors and casing parts need to be maintained which can be difficult to keep up with during heavy production when machines are progressively wearing down.

However, sometimes the damage begins earlier than usual because the machinery is not properly lubricated. It’s important to resist running or starting a PD blower when it’s low on oil because the gears will fail which will then clash the rotor lobes and make the bearings fail. Aim to change your oil (we suggest our AEON PD synthetic blower lubricant) every 500-1000 hours of operation to avoid premature wear on bearings and gears. Additionally, if you are working in a dirty or strenuous environment, you will need to change the oil more often.

So what can you do to help extend the life cycle of your PD blower? At Blocker & Wallace, we recommend initiating a consistent and thorough maintenance protocol. Conducting daily and weekly inspection tasks like checking oil levels, monitoring vibration frequencies, checking belt tensions and relief valves will lessen the likelihood of damage to your truck blower.

If you notice critical wear and tear on the PD blower’s rotating parts we recommend a full-service check on the machinery as well as periodical full-service repairs to avoid irreparable damage. At an experienced service center, the PD blower will be disassembled and the seals, bearings and other parts will be thoroughly inspected and repaired. Once reassembled, the machine will be tested and this data will be kept on file for future reference. Particular attention should be made to the repositioning of shims, dowels, retainer rings, O-Rings, lubrication, fasteners and fittings.

A PD blower is such an integral part of many industries’ production processes, but its parts are often neglected until the machinery shuts down. Don’t wait for production to be halted to show some TLC to your PD blower.

At Blocker & Wallace we have a variety of PD Blowers to accommodate any application including  Sutorbilt, DuroFlow, Drum, CycloBlower, HeliFlow, TriFlow, and Elmo Rietschle to help improve your processes. In addition, we have corresponding Sutorbilt blower oil and AEON PD blower oil to keep your blowers performing at their best.
