Choosing Between PD Blower or Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump for Your Truck

It’s a new year which means it’s time to reevaluate your equipment needs. While both PD blowers and rotary vane pumps have benefits, it’s important to weigh out each item’s pro and cons to decide which one is best for you.

At the surface, PD blowers and rotary vane vacuum pumps serve the same purpose--to create negative pressure. However, pumps compress air while the blowers utilize twin rotors to rotate and force air out into a tank.

Figuring out what you intend to pump is one of the most important things to consider before deciding on a pump or blower. If you’re using the truck blower to handle industrial dry materials, sewer cleaning or hydro excavation, then a blower is your best bet. That’s because these tasks require more CFM (cubic feet per minute) than other jobs.

If you’re conducting janitorial tasks like cleaning portable restrooms, the CFM of a pump will do.

Moving Beyond CFMs

Furthermore, if this is a multipurpose truck that will be used to handle more strenuous jobs, you can get a blower that can accommodate those higher CFMs. Beyond CFM needs, you should also consider hose size. If your job requires that the tank’s negative pressure needs to be maintained over a long period of time, then the PD blower is once again your best bet. The smaller the hose, the easier it will be to maintain the negative pressure. In addition, the CFM correlates quite well to the hose size. The greater the CFM, the smaller your hose should be.

The Customer Comes First

Where does the majority of your business comes from? If it’s septic systems then a vane pump is most likely the better tool to use because they are built for difficult jobs. Often, these pumps can last over a decade and the repairs are less expensive than a blower would be.

Conversely because of the sensitive tolerances of its internal parts, blowers can be very fragile. They can be easily marred by both liquids and solids. They are difficult to repair and are quite costly. As we discussed in our "Why You Shouldn't Wait to Get Repair Service for Your PD Blower" blog, PD blowers can halt your production for weeks depending on the severity.

In addition to considering your customer base, you should take into account how often these customers or the public will be there while you work. If you are working during traditional business hours in a commercial or residential area, a pump would be better. By contrast, a truck blower is more powerful and is thus noisier with higher decibels, though the 2LP Sutorbilt Legend Blower is known for it’s quieter operation.

Maintenance

No matter what equipment you choose, it’s critical to your business’s production to maintain your pump or pd blower. For example, blowers’ internal components require protection from overheating, but a pump can be worked harder until reaching this point.
