3 Ways Vacuum Pumps Assist the Oil and Gas Industry

Vacuum pumps are utilized in a variety of applications across many industries around the world. These amazing machines have revolutionized industrial processes by transforming the way liquids, gases and other materials are transferred or gathered from one location to the next. Not only have they provided an efficient means of moving materials, they are often a vital component in a wide range industrial procedures that require precise and accurate results. Due to the vacuum pump’s versatility, this machine has been adopted by the oil and gas industry to provide the efficiency and precision needed to move gas and oil in a plethora of applications. Listed below are three ways vacuum pumps assist the oil and gas industry:

Field Gas Boosting

Field gas boosting is described as the process of boosting low-pressure gas from a wellhead to a high-pressure pipeline. The wellhead has a reasonably low positive pressure and is commonly below atmospheric pressure. Thus, a vacuum pump is required to extract the gas and boost it to a PSI above atmospheric pressure. The gas is then usually delivered to a gas processing plant by a high-pressure compressor through a pipeline.

Enhanced Oil Recovery

Enhanced oil recovery is a process that involves putting a vacuum on an oil well to relieve pressure on the well. This increases oil production by allowing the oil to flow more freely through the well. This application can also recover associated gas at the surface of the well.

Digester Gas Recovery (Bio-Gas)

Industrial or human waste is treated by dumping the rubbish in a holding or sludge tank for controlled decomposition. To expedite the decomposition process, a compressor or vacuum pump compresses gas into a sparging unit piped into the tank. This gas provides heat, suspends the waste and also activates bugs to eat the decomposed material. A vacuum pump is also used to recover this gas and compress it to a natural gas engine. This gas is used to drive a generator to produce electricity.

I didn't realize how vacuum pumps were used. That is incredible how technology has been able to benefit these two industries. I had never heard of advanced oil recovery before, seem very efficient.
